Emma Hardinge Britten was born in London, England in 1823 and is widely considered to be one of the pioneers of modern Spiritualism. As a child she often saw dead family friends and relatives, as well as being able to predict the outcome of coming events.
During a visit to America in 1855 she found she had a mediumship ability for table tipping and rapping. During a table séance she held in 1856, a message from a friend who had died on a recently sunk ship was spelt out- no one knew the friend was dead. After this Emma became a well known medium.
